Bridge to Terabithia

Bridge to Terabithia is a 2007 fantasy drama film by Walt Disney Pictures. It is directed by Gábor Csupó and stars Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb, Robert Patrick, Bailee Madison, and Zooey Deschanel. It is based on the novel of the same name by Katherine Paterson, whose son David Paterson wrote the screenplay for the movie.

The movie is about two ten-year-old neighbors who create a world called Terabithia. In the beginning, fifth grader Jesse Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) meets Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb) in the school as both enter a running event. Soon, they discover that they are both neighbors. The next day, Jesse and Leslie venture into the woods and swing across a creek on a rope. They discover an abandoned tree house and a broken down truck on the other side. With Leslie’s urging and imagination, they invented a fantasy world called “Terabithia.” In this world, everything they imagine and say comes to life. In this world, they fight and race against different creatures and a human-like troll. In this world, they are free from problems and worries. But when will this make-believe world last? Will it end? For Jesse must face a heart-breaking ending – he would lose Leslie. Forever.

Bridge to Terabithia is an imaginative children film. It explores the power of imagination and how it resolves the issues surrounding the characters. Through the fantasy world, Jesse is able to reconcile with his impoverished family, and Leslie to enhance her creativity. The movie also talks about the pain of love and loss through children’s eyes. It is totally different when the perspective is of the children’s because every sentiment seems so genuine, raw, and infectious. This movie has one of the most moving endings I have seen. It can easily move one to tears, especially when audience realizes what happened to one of the heroes. Somehow, the impact and memories she left behind have marked the hearts of everyone.

I have to give credit to AnnaSophia Rob for her brilliant performance as the female lead role. She has made great chemistry to Hutcherson. More than that, her transition from the sad introvert to the vibrant and careless heroine is very fluid and flawless. She has brought much life for the seemingly dull film. AnnaSophia has also done so well in her previous movies.

The movie received generally positive reviews. It has a positive rating of 85% at Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 7.1/10. At Metacritic, it received an average score of 74.

I will give Bridge to Terabithia four and a half stars out of five. Though this is one of my favorite fantasy films, I feel the movie is too deep for the children’s category. Though the explosion of the imaginations of the characters is very engaging and mesmerizing, the movie has several sleepy moments which may disinterest young viewers. Still, a very great movie to watch for.
